They are growing like weeds!
These past 2 weeks have been so busy that I've been a total blog slacker. My apologies.
So much has happened . .
1- last I told you, Karma has a blocked mammary gland and we were very worried about having to put her on antibiotics and then separate her from the babies. We did not want that to happen! I called my Holistic Vet (Dr. Cathy Taphorn) and she recommended a holistic supplement and with fingers crossed I gave her the doses. I don't know why I'm surprised, but it worked in less than a week. The blockage is gone and she is starting to ween her kittens. Talk about a huge sigh of relief for me.
2- the kittens are now litter box trained. This was quite the experience for my household. I started out with small disposable jelly roll pans with non-clumping litter in them. They would play in them and scare me to death when they tried to eat the gravel. My husband and I were down in the basement feeding and cleaning and we saw Destiny in the pan. We both held out breath and actually high-fived when she peed in there. Such proud foster parents :-) Since then all four are using the big kitty boxes and we are very happy with their progress.
I won't lie - they make a huge mess. They play in the boxes and throw litter and other stuff all over the place. Sometimes they miss the box and its all over. Sometimes they prefer the pee pads instead. We are all still learning as we go. Since they are no longer eating the litter, we switched to clumpable litter which made a huge smell difference. They all go in the covered boxes and are very good about not playing in there anymore.
3- they are now starting to eat kitten wet and dry food. Fate really enjoys the wet food and was the first to eat. Now all 4 will take mouthfuls but they are still a couple weeks before they will eat all kitten food. They are still nursing on mom.
4- just like puppies, they play in the water dish. Another HUGE mess. They dump it over, mix it with the dry food, play in it and basically have a blast making a mess. I fill that bowl more times a day than I care to mention
5- Karma has become quite the lover. She knows her name and will come when called. I can't tell you how many cat clients we have that their cat won't respond to their name so I was surprised at how quickly she picked up on her name. When I call she comes and looks for her treat. She is almost dog-like. She rubs on my legs, bumps her head on my hands and enjoys her pets. She will even go belly up and let me rub the belly. Another dog like thing. She doesn't even do that game where she grabs your hand - she enjoy the belly rub. She is not a huge fan of being picked up, but she will tolerate it. She is learning that the lap could be a great place, but baby steps with that one.
6- I got in touch with Paws and Purrs Humane Society and they emailed me all the forms for adoption. I am still waiting to find out how long I should keep them before they are ready to go to their forever homes. Once I figure that out I will let you know.If you are interested in adopting, let me know and I will email you the agreements. Jessica@HSHpet.net
7- Kittens are so much fun. They play with their shadows, run and play with their tail. Stalk with mom and siblings. If you want your kitten fix let me know and for a small fee (aka litter box scooping) you are welcome to come over and play with them.
Almost a month old
5/18-20

Each day Karma gets more and more trusting of me. I have been so patient with her and she is really learning to trust people again. In the beginning she only would come out for me, but now she comes out for my husband as well. The kittens are very social and I think that they are showing her that its fun to play with the humans and they won't hurt you.

Destiny is still the leader of the pack and is the first to do everything. She comes running to see me as soon as she hears my voice. She is already climbing out of the initial whelping area and exploring.

Fate is stil the littlest and her eyes are so soulful. She looks you right in the face and holds your gaze. She will be a lap kitten and enjoy the one on one attention. She also runs to see me when she hears m voice. It breaks my heart each morning when I go down to feed them and then come running. Super cute!

Kimet is still the biggest boy. He is gorgeous and his coat has changed a bit. You can faintly see tabby marking underneath his gray coat. He is going to be a knockout. He hangs back and lets his sisters lead the way. He is also the most vocal. When he doesn't get what he wants his cry is ear piercing.

Chance is also a bit shy but learning to enjoy people. He tolerated being hugged, squeezed and kissed but prefers to be down on the ground exploring. He is also going to be a bis boy. He is also quite the playmate. He bites his siblings and plays pretty rough with Kismet.

Karma has a minor health problem. She has a blocked mammary gland and if it doesn't unblock by next week we will need to start her on antibiotics. The problem with this is that she will need to be separated from her kittens and they are not eating food yet. We are starting to try food with them, but they aren't interested. Please say a prayer that her gland unblocks and she can stay with her kittens. I think being separated from them will really cause a step back for her.
I want to remind everyone that we MUST find great homes for each of them. If you or anyone you know if interested in adopting one, please have them call or email me.

They are growing like weeds
5/14-16 - I have been such a slacker these past days. I'm enjoying playing with Karma & the kittens so much that I forget to blog and tell you all how they are doing.
I am so pleased with the progress that Karma is making. She comes out to see me and rubs her head on my legs and hands. She purrs and kneads her feet as I brush her and pet her. She will make a very nice pet for someone. She really does need someone who is patient and has a quieter household. She is still new to this home life thing and little noises make her nervous.
The kittens are mobile! They are climbing up and over mom, coming out of the whelping box and even starting to play with each other. It is soooo cute to watch them bat at each other. They aren't very good on their feet so they fall over and end up wrestling WWF style :-). I'm pretty sure they are can now hear - even though I haven't had them tested. They respond to fingers snapping and cry when another kitten cries.
They are getting soooo big - don't you agree?
Destiny - 3 weeks old. 15 1/8 ounces (almost a pound). Destiny is the first to do anything. She comes out of the whelping box to see me. Enjoys exploring where ever I put her down. Has no fear of climbing over things to get to what she wants.
Chance - also 3 weeks old. 15 7/8 ounces. He likes to stay with mom. I would call him the shy one, since he prefers to hang back and watch what goes on.
Fate (the runt) - 3 weeks old. 12 5/8 ounces. Her siblings definitely look much bigger than her. She is quiet one. Also independent like Destiny, but more reserves. She will be a lap cat who enjoys just hanging out. Tonight she was in my lap so long I forgot she was there.
Kismet - 15 1/4 ounces (also 3 weeks old) and is absolutely beautiful. I really do think he will be long haired, since his coat feels so much different than his siblings. He is the instigator. Likes to jump on his sisters and bite them. Once he grows more sure of himself, he will be fun to watch.
So thats all I have for now, but I 'm starting to panic about finding them all homes. Please, share this blog and lets hope they are get loving, forever homes. Thanks!

progress
5/12-13 Blogger has been in a read only mode for the past two days and I have so much to tell.
Karma is really starting to love attention and human contact. Don't get me wrong, she is still very shy and nervous but I've gotten her to go belly up for me to pet her. She purrs and bumps her head on me, so I truly believe she is enjoying my attention. I got a quick video of her enjoying "our time". If you are wondering why I put the camera down, Kismet got his head stuck and was screaming. I wasn't evening thinking I just out down the camera and pried his head out. Silly kitten!
The kittens are becoming more active and more willing to explore. They are even starting to play with each other. Its so cute to see them wrestle in their rolly polly way. When they walk its almost like they've had a bit too much to drink. Destiny is the leader in adventure. She will leave the whelping box and explore. I think it about time to get them a litter box to get used to. I think maybe a disposable pie pan will work.
A bit of bad news. Fate has now come down with the cruddy eyes and I've had to start her on an antibiotic. I just hope the boys don't get it. Cross your paws :-)
I will give updated weight and photo's tomorrow when the light is better. Today has been to dreary for good photos.

who is who
Tues 5/10
The kittens are becoming so active. Their eyes are opening and they are crawling around their whelping box. They have all found their voices also.
After an outing to the Vet yesterday, mom is settled back in. The little white kitty is being good about taking her mediation and seems to actually like the taste (yuck!).
I brought them up to my office today to experience more household smells and sights. They are crawling around my floor with me (I'm sooo not getting much work done with them to entertain me).
So I love the idea of the names that I posted so I want to officially post who is who.
Fate is the little female brown tabby. She is he smallest of he bunch and very happy to held and be on the boom of he kitten pile. So cute and trusting.
Destiny will be the little white and brown tabby spotted girl. She is the independent adventurer. She is the first to do everything. She is very trusting of anyone handling her and enjoys being stroked.
Chance will be the brown tabby boy. He is quiet and sticks right by mom. He is a big boy and enjoys eating and does not like being interrupted.
Kismet is the all gray boy. I think he is going to be long haired since his fur feels so much different than his siblings. He is also very attached to mom and will cry when separated from her. He is clearly the biggest eater and largest of the group.
So which one do YOU want to adopt?? Maybe Karma????

5/8-9
Sunday was a really busy day. The kitten had several visitors and were on their best behavior. Plus Karma had another breakthrough. I had her out of the cage and petting and she started rubbing her head on my leg and bumping my hands with her head. I was so excited to tell me husband, its like each day she shows me more and more than she wants human companionship. Who ever ends up adopting her will need to be patient as she does things at her own pace. She doesn't like change, which I assume is because the only constant in her life these last few weeks have been her schedule.
This morning as I was checking on Karma and the babies I noticed the little white one's eye was closed and crusted with yellow goop. I checked them all and any she had the eye problem. I decided to take them all to the vet since I didn't want mom not to take her back if she smelled different.
The Vet agreed with me that Karma has been an exceptional mom and has very healthy babies. She thought that the eye problem is either an upper respiratory problem or herpes. She both are common in young kittens so I was sent home with antibiotics. I can just tell that the little white one isn't feeling well because she cried in the car and most of the time at the vet.
The staff at the vet was so excited to see Karma doing so well and happy we were able to find her kittens and raise them in a home environment. They all held them and ooed and awed over them. I love that the staff is that loving.
This bring me to the last thing - names. I'm tired of calling the white kitten and girl tabby. Kathy (staff member @ HSH), her husband came up with a very cute idea. He looked up the word karma in the thesaurus and found these potential names. I like the idea of naming them after Karma since true to her name's definition. It was Fate we caught her, Destiny we found her babies, by Chance she was healthy and FIV negative and Kismet that this was all supposed to happen this way.

Comfort Zone
Sat. 5/7
Have you been thinking of names for the kittens??? I'm really bad at coming up with names so I would rather you all send me your ideas. Please?
Last night we brought Karma and the babies into the living room to hang out while we watched TV. She wasn't 100% comfortable and there were a couple hisses at the dogs. The babies are so much fun. They snuggle in with you, sleep any where and make the most adorable noises. At one point I had them all in my lap since where one goes they all must go.
I'm really trying to being Karma out of her comfort zone. I want her to want to be out with me, but I know, baby steps. Living in the house might be an entire new experience for her. We have no idea of her history, but I would guess she started her life inside with people. Otherwise there is no way she would let me hold her, brush her (which she likes), take her babies or eat treats from my hand.
I really want Karma to go into a AWESOME forever home. We know she is not crazy about dogs, so preferably a no dog home. Have you thought about adopting Karma or one of the kittens? It won't be long before they will be finding forever homes. I will be getting the adoption application soon and info and Paws and Purrs requirements to adopt. Just want to get you all into the mind set of helping HSH find great, forever homes for this group.
More tomorrow . . .
